Background
Rapid advances in biobanking and genomics have resulted in unprecedented data resources - the leading example being the UK Biobank dataset, which boasts a rich collection of longitudinal, phenotypic and genomic data from 500,000 individuals. However, extracting value from biobank data resources has been challenging:
- Data management challenge. Organizing, cleaning, and harmonizing ever-evolving data, within and across biobanks, for a myriad of interconnected data types: omics, biomarker, health records, etc., as well as their metadata and downstream analyses (e.g. GWAS/pheWAS results). To do this, you don’t want to work directly with thousands of disparate files - it’d be far too time-consuming and error-prone.
- Navigational challenge. There are thousands of phenotypic fields from hundreds of thousands of individuals - you can’t rely on Excel to explore them!
- Scalability challenge. Querying and performing association analysis for trillions of genotypes - traditional genomics software would also simply take far too many days to process this extensive dataset.
Fortunately, navigational & scalability challenges have largely been solved - with a plethora of solutions now offering a combination of computing infrastructure and pre-baked visualization tools. On the other hand, data management remains painful, leading to suboptimal data and inflexible analysis. To get the maximum value from biobank data, you need to sort out the data first - and the insights will come much more easily.
